The Principles of Collaboration: Lessons from the Escaping Violence Payment Program
In today’s increasingly interconnected world, collaboration is not just beneficial but essential for the success of community service initiatives. At UnitingCare Australia, our extensive network of community service organisations across Australia has consistently demonstrated the power of effective collaboration. A recent example is the Escaping Violence Payment (EVP) program trial, launched in 2021 in collaboration with the UnitingCare Consortium, where joint efforts have paved the way for substantial impact.
Led by Uniting Vic.Tas (who also deliver the program in the Northern Territory), along with members Wesley Mission (NSW and ACT), UnitingCare (QLD), Uniting WA, Uniting Communities, UnitingCare Wesley Bowden (SA), Uniting Country SA, Uniting SA, and UnitingCare Australia, the program addresses economic abuse, a critical barrier for those leaving intimate partner violence. By overcoming the barrier of limited financial independence, it provides practical support for individuals seeking to escape violent situations and start their journey of recovery and healing.
Through this experience, we’ve distilled several principles of successful collaboration that are vital for individuals, companies, organisations, or governments looking to come together to make a meaningful difference.
-
Agreement on core aims and objectives
The foundation of any successful collaboration is a shared vision of what “success” looks like. In the EVP program, all consortium members came together to define clear and concise objectives. This unified vision ensured that every action taken was aligned with the overarching goal of providing essential support to those escaping violence. Defining success in measurable terms allowed for the setting of realistic targets and benchmarks, fostering a sense of shared purpose and direction.
-
Clear scope and realistic expectations
A collaborative project must have a well-defined scope, delineating what can realistically be achieved and identifying what lies beyond its reach. During the EVP program, careful consideration was given to outlining the project’s boundaries; what can and cannot be delivered (and funded) through the initiative, as well as managing stakeholder expectations throughout. This clarity helped in avoiding mission creep, ensuring that all efforts were focused on achievable outcomes. By acknowledging limitations, partners could channel resources more effectively and maintain a concentrated effort on the program’s core objectives.
-
Agreed timeframes and milestones
Time pressures were one of the most significant challenges encountered with delivery of the Trial. Setting realistic milestones and deadlines is crucial for maintaining momentum and ensuring steady progress. In our collaboration, all partners agreed on timeframes that were ambitious but also attainable. Regular check-ins and updates on milestones allowed for adjustments and ensured that everyone remained on track. This approach not only kept the project moving forward but also built trust among partners, as everyone could see tangible progress being made.
-
Alignment on organisational values
For collaboration to be truly effective, all partners must share common values that guide their actions and decisions. In the EVP Trial, alignment of values, including empathy, respect, and commitment to social justice, provided a reliable and solid foundation for project implementation. These shared values acted as a compass, ensuring that every step taken was consistent with the mission of the consortium. This alignment fostered a sense of unity and collective responsibility.
-
Consistent performance standards
Maintaining high-quality service delivery requires agreed-upon performance standards. In the EVP Trial, we established clear thresholds for service quality and client support. These standards were not only agreed upon but also rigorously monitored. Consistent performance metrics ensured that all partners were held accountable and that the beneficiaries of the program received the best possible support.
-
Adequate financial resources
No collaboration can thrive without adequate resources. For the EVP program, securing sufficient financial support was paramount. Ensuring delivery partners were adequately resourced was equally important. Clear communication regarding funding processes and timely delivery of resources ensured that the project could move forward without unnecessary delays. This includes sufficient financial support to deliver expected outcomes, with clear communication regarding processes for funding delivery.
-
Adequate human resources
Sufficient human resources are critical for facilitating the implementation of any initiative. In the EVP program, allocating time and resources for the recruitment and training of personnel was crucial. This investment in human capital ensured that the team was well-equipped to handle the complexities of the project, providing the necessary support and expertise to achieve the desired outcomes.
-
Clear and consistent communication
Effective communication is the glue that holds any collaboration together. Throughout the EVP program, maintaining open, clear, and consistent communication channels was a priority. Regular meetings, progress reports, and updates kept all partners informed and engaged. This transparency fostered trust and allowed for the timely identification and resolution of any issues that arose. Consistent communication ensured that everyone was on the same page, facilitating smooth collaboration and decision-making.
-
Strong collaboration and shared decision-making mechanisms
Successful collaborations thrive on collective input and shared decision-making. EVP incorporated mechanisms that allowed all partners to contribute to key decisions. This inclusive approach not only harnessed the diverse expertise within the consortium but also ensured that decisions were well-rounded and thoroughly considered. By valuing each partner’s input and fostering a culture of mutual respect, the project benefited from a wealth of perspectives and ideas.
-
Effective tools for collaboration and information sharing
In the digital age, leveraging technology to facilitate collaboration is essential. The program utilised a range of ICT platforms and tools for communication, data collection, and information sharing. These tools acted as enablers, streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency. Whether through virtual meetings, shared databases, or collaborative project management software, these technological solutions made it easier for partners to work together seamlessly, regardless of their geographic location.
Bringing it all together
The principles of successful collaboration learned from the EVP program will continue to be instrumental in guiding UnitingCare Australia’s efforts. By focusing on shared objectives, clear scopes, realistic milestones, aligned values, consistent performance standards, and sufficient resources, we have built a robust framework for future collaboration. Coupled with clear communication, strong decision-making mechanisms, and effective use of technology, these principles ensure that our collaborations are not only productive but also impactful.
As we continue to address complex social challenges, these principles will remain at the heart of our collective agenda. By fostering a culture of unity, respect, and shared purpose, we can achieve greater outcomes and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. At UnitingCare Australia, we are committed to these principles, and we look forward to future collaborations that build on these foundations, driving positive change and supporting vulnerable communities across the nation.
