UnitingSA tackles housing crisis with innovative community housing project
In a significant step towards addressing South Australia’s chronic housing shortage, UnitingSA has unveiled its largest community housing development to date – Uniting on Davenport – located in Prospect. The $15.9 million project represents a comprehensive approach to providing housing solutions for vulnerable community members. UnitingSA is one of UnitingCare Australia’s frontline organisations, supporting 5.8 million interactions across Australia every year.
The development stands out for its multifaceted approach to housing, featuring:
- 21 affordable housing apartments
- 10 social housing apartments
- 2 specialist disability accommodation apartments
- 7 townhouses (sold privately to help fund the project).
UnitingSA CEO Jenny Hall says the organisation’s commitment goes beyond building structures.
“We’re not just about constructing buildings; we’re very much about building communities where people can thrive,” Jenny explains.
“The project offers wraparound services, including mental health support, counseling, and NDIS services when needed.”
Strategically situated in the heart of Prospect, the development is carefully designed to promote community interaction. Built around an internal landscaped courtyard, the design encourages resident engagement and social connection. The location was deliberately chosen to provide residents with access to essential services, schools, and transportation.
UnitingSA has been making significant strides in community housing over the last decade. Since 2018, the organisation has completed nine building projects, delivering over 250 new homes for South Australians. Currently, it manages or is constructing 975 properties, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to addressing housing challenges.
Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion MP praised the project as an excellent example of urban regeneration.
“This development replaces six old houses with 40 new homes, offering a range of housing options from market sales to social and disability housing,” he said.
The Uniting on Devonport project showcases how innovative, compassionate approaches can make a real difference in addressing one of South Australia’s most pressing social challenges.
