Building a resilient Australia; UnitingCare calls for stronger care system in Federal Budget
Adequate funding is critical for developing resilient care infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of our community, so everyone in Australia can access high-quality and timely care.
In our 2025/26 Federal Budget submission, we have outlined three key proposals focusing on building a more resilient nation amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
- Building a stronger and more flexible care and support system
- Nurturing safe and resilient communities
- Delivering an aged care system that serves all older Australians
As Australia’s largest social services provider, UnitingCare Australia provides 5.8 million service interactions annually across 1,600 sites nationwide and is advocating for significant investments in care infrastructure and community support services
Our National Director, Claerwen Little, highlights that with 13.4% of Australians living below the poverty line, and one in four households relying on emergency services, immediate action is crucial.
“Investing in human services is about cultivating long-term social wellbeing, cohesion and resilience to nurture healthier, more connected communities—an outcome with both social and economic benefits,” Ms Little said.
Our submission’s three main proposals include building a stronger care and support system, nurturing safe and resilient communities, and delivering an aged care system that better serves older Australians.
Key recommendations include:
- $24 billion investment over four years to increase JobSeeker and Youth Allowance rates,
- $375 million for grant indexation to support community services, and
- $1.34 billion for an aged care transition supplement.
Our network also calls for expanding domestic violence prevention programs and financial wellbeing initiatives, noting that 45% of Australian households report decreased trust and social cohesion, with lower-income areas feeling the greatest impact.
These investments are essential for building long-term social wellbeing and economic resilience, particularly as the care sector faces viability challenges without proper funding.
