UnitingCare Australia warmly welcomes the Federal Government’s decision today to protect the incomes of Disability Support Pensioners (DSP) who actively seek employment.
From 1 September 2008 those on DSP can have their employment assistance needs assessed without fear of losing income in the process, effectively segregating the evaluation of pension eligibility from the evaluation of employment assistance.
“UnitingCare Australia sees this as a huge step in the right direction by the Minister for Employment Participation, Brendan O’Connor,” said chair of UnitingCare Australia’s Employment Services Group, Quinn Pawson.
“UnitingCare Australia believes the previous system was a major disincentive for those on DSP to participate in the workforce,” said Mr Pawson.
“We commend this announcement and will continue to work with the Federal Government in developing new and innovative ways of further securing the employment participation of those who are marginalised and vulnerable.”
