Yesterday, the President of the Uniting Church in Australia, Rev. Alistair Macrae, spoke to a cross-party parliamentary forum at Parliament House in Canberra outlining the Uniting Church's support for a Human Rights Act.
Michael Brown, UnitingCare Australia’s Director of Government Relations, and Rev. Elenie Poulos, National Director of UnitingJustice, were also in Canberra meeting with several ALP politicians about this issue.
The Uniting Church, along with a number of Christian groups made a submission to the National Human Rights Consultation in support of an ACT. IN its submission, the Uniting Church articulated its commitment to social justice and the achievement of human dignity for all through a Human Rights Act.
In a media release earlier this week, Rev. Poulos said that the Uniting Church’s support of a Human Rights Act rests on the importance of providing protections to the most vulnerable, marginalised and disadvantaged in the Australian community; those who currently have few avenues for remedy when their rights are violated. Read the full media release here.
In another advocacy action this week, the Uniting Church in Australia wrote to all federal ALP MPs & Senators, urging them to implement recommendations made in the National Human Rights Consultation’s report. UnitingJustice is calling on everyone to help advocate for a Human Rights Act in Australia by writing to their local ALP Senator or MP. Please read their call to action here, and pass the message on to other people who support a Human Rights Act in Australia.
